abrasive tape cleaningThe cleaning of the abrasive tape is an operation that occasionally becomes necessary to store them and because the tapes knead losing their abrasive capacity and must be cleaned.

There are two types of makers to simplify the use of tapes:

  • Those who always use new tapes
  • Those who use them to the last abrasive grain

Clearly I am going to extremes but surely the makers of a certain level always want to work with new tapes in order to have a good control of what they are doing and not unnecessarily overheat the blade especially after it has been hardened.

Surely abrasive belts are a cost but you should not exaggerate in wanting to use tapes that have now lost their abrasive capacity especially when the blade is in finish, it does not really make sense.

But the theme of this post can however concern the tapes that still have their efficiency but because of some processed materials are kneaded going to overlap the abrasive granules and making the tape less efficient, and that is why you have to use the para or some more home made methods to return the tape “clean”.

The kneading of the tape happens mainly using some synthetic materials and types of wood the tapes losing their abrasive capacity but it can be restored by cleaning the tape now kneaded.

To clean the abrasive belt there are various methods as I told you, from the cheapest to the most “expensive” ones.

To clean the abrasive belt, you can follow these simple steps:

  • Turn off your electric sander and remove the abrasive belt.
  • With a stiff-bristled brush, carefully remove all dust and debris on the abrasive belt.
  • If there are stubborn stains, you can use a mild detergent and a damp cloth to remove them. Be sure to dry the abrasive tape well after cleaning it.
  • Alternatively, you can use an eraser to remove stains or scale.
  • Once cleaned, check that the tape is straight and tightly stretched before remounting it on your electric sander.

It is important to clean the abrasive belt regularly to prevent it from clogging and reducing its abrasive capacity, which could compromise the quality of your sanding work.

In addition, here are some useful tips to keep the abrasive belt in good condition:

  1. Never use harsh solvents to clean the abrasive belt, as they may damage it.
  2. Avoid pressing too the electric sander during work, as this may cause increased wear of the abrasive belt.
  3. Use only high-quality abrasive belt, so you get the best sanding results.
  4. When you’re not using your electric sander, cover it with a cloth to protect the abrasive belt from dust and weathering.
  5. Replace the abrasive belt when you notice that its abrasive capacity has decreased or when it is damaged.

By following these tips and cleaning the abrasive belt regularly, you can ensure high-quality sanding work and extend the life of your electric sander.

Also, here are some specific tips for cleaning your abrasive belt based on the type of material you’re sanding:

Wood: When working with wood, the abrasive belt can accumulate resin and sawdust, which can compromise its abrasive ability. Use a stiff-bristled brush or eraser to remove these residues.

Metal: When working with metal, the abrasive belt can accumulate splinters and metal parts that come off during sanding. Use a stiff-bristled brush to remove these particles and prevent them from getting encrusted on the abrasive belt.

Plastic: Plastic can melt on the abrasive belt, causing the formation of a thin film that reduces its abrasive capacity. Use a stiff-bristled brush or eraser to remove these scales.

Paint: paint can accumulate on the abrasive belt and compromise its abrasive capacity. Use a stiff-bristled brush or eraser to remove paint fouling.

Always remember to clean the abrasive belt after each use and check it regularly to make sure it is in good condition.

In this way, you can achieve the best sanding results and extend the life of your electric sander.

Pay attention to the direction of sanding when using the abrasive belt.

Be sure to always sand in the same direction as the wire of the wood or metal, so as to achieve a uniform result and prevent uneven wear of the abrasive belt.

If you notice that the abrasive belt is wearing out irregularly, you may need to adjust the tension or alignment of the electric sander.

Check your machine’s instruction manual for more information on how to make these adjustments.

In conclusion, cleaning the abrasive belt regularly is essential to keep your electric sander in good condition and achieve the best sanding results.

Remember to use the right tools to remove sanding residues based on the material you are working and to pay attention to the direction of sanding.

In this way, you can extend the life of your sander and always get optimal results.

Here are the main methods to clean an abrasive tape

  • Tape cleaning para:

This is the most professional method, the para and with a cost around 12 euros solve the problem and recover many tapes.

Para rubber, internationally called CREPE SOLE, is produced by calendering natural rubbers from the best plantations, without the addition of chemical additives or dyes: the different colors obtained are due to the mixing of different types of raw rubber.

It has excellent properties such as: abrasion resistance, high elasticity, high resistance to water, acidic, alkaline and saline solutions.

  • Black rubber of the workraft you can find it in the brico, a pass and the abrasive tape is cleaned.
  • High-quality latex rubber that works for cleaning abrasive belt, discs and abrasive sheets and removes instructions in a simple and effective way.

  • A rubber strip made from an old air chamber for tiresi, rolled very very tight on itself and stuck at the end with duct tape. No expense and it works but if you just don’t have a para at that time because you’re done.

Conclusions

As you can see, you have several options to clean your tapes and still be able to use them effectively.

Sometimes the tapes seem to be more worn out than they really are by still extending the duration of the tape.

Be careful not to insist because if the tape is consumed it is consumed, do not insist and consider that a tape that has little abrasion as I told you previously overheats the blade unnecessarily going to affect the quality of the blade.
